On 7 December 2018, ECL Managing Director Jörg Ullrich, accompanied by colleague Christine Hasse from our Rostock office, handed over the cheque to the association’s founder, Astrid Ledwina.
The “Rehahunde-Deutschland e.V.” association has set itself the task of training puppies and young dogs to become assistance dogs. The training of each individual ‘rehab’ dog is carried out in a very individual way. Taking its particular abilities into consideration, the dog is trained as an assistance dog (to accompany a disabled person), a therapy companion dog, an advance warning dog for people with diabetes or epilepsy or as an assistant dog for people with autism to cater for the very specific needs of these people. The dogs not only provide assistance for the people in need of help, it also eases the strain on their families.
Ms. Ledwina is particularly fond of her “Mileshome” project. In this project, her dogs are trained in the area of coping with trauma to make them suitable for use as PTSD assistants for soldiers with post-traumatic stress disorders following a traumatic experience. “The dog enters into worlds that no person is even allowed get close to”, explains Ledwina.
Ms. Ledwina currently has seven dogs in training. Other dogs are trained by members of the association, with these specialist trainers always doing this in their own homes.
“I am very impressed by the work being done here and hope that our small donation will help the association to achieve its goals”, reported Jörg Ullrich of his visit. “We wish Ms. Ledwina and the “Rehahunde-Deutschland e.V.” association every success and that special touch in working with these eager, enthusiastic and such affectionate dogs.”
